By Renee Garcia

Do you have bedbugs at home? If you do, you must first identify the site of infestation. How can you do this?

In identifying the infestation site, you must take note of the time and place that you get bitten by the bedbugs. Does this happen when you slept on your bed? Or did it happen when you slept in the guest room? You can now identify the specific area in your house that is infested. Next step is to look for the insects. Check the specific furniture that you slept on. If it is the mattress, look for cracks and holes. After that, you must check anything that is close to the mattress. Look for cracks and holes where bedbugs usually live.

One type of bedbugs that you will find is the mature adult form. These adult bedbugs are reddish-brown in color and their bodies are approximately 4 to 5 mm long. Adults have oval, flat bodies that look banded. Adults are also wingless.

Another type of bedbugs is the immature nymph. Compared to adults, nymphs are lighter, translucent, and smaller. Now that you have identified the insects and the site of infestation, you can do two things to get rid of them. You can either call an exterminator, or you can go to the store to buy a bedbug spray.

Many insecticides have been designed to kill bedbugs. You can buy these insecticides in sprays or dust forms. Some insecticides in the market today are less toxic and eco-friendly.

In choosing a bedbug spray, you must first know if this can be used on the materials that your furniture is made from. There are some bedbug sprays that can be used on wood only. And others are for mattresses only. But still, some bedbug sprays can be used on any material.

Before you begin spraying, you have to scrub and vacuum the infested furniture first. After vacuuming, dispose of the vacuum bag inside a plastic bag. This will seal in all bedbugs and avoid further contamination.

After scrubbing and vacuuming, you can apply the bedbug spray on infested furniture. Just remember to read and follow the instructions carefully. You must also check if re-treatment is needed. There are many different bedbug sprays that can be bought in the market today. Examples of there are Tempo, Malathion, Pyrethrins, and Allethrin.
