Why Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back Was Great

By Eric Pierce

Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back is one of the best science fiction movies ever made. The movie has something for everyone, and can be re-watched over and over again. The acting is great and the story is compelling. The Star Wars universe is a great place to escape to, especially these days with the recession still hanging over people's heads.

There are many reasons this is such a great movie. The viewer is treated to seeing the underdogs, the people on the run, the people that are being hunted. Being hunted is a strange thing, and it creates a sort of drama that simply can't be recreated anywhere else.

Of course, it wouldn't be much of a movie if they just hung out on some random planet the whole time, so they are found pretty quickly. The battle that ensures is a spectacular battle. The rebels are so over powered that there whole strategy is simply to try to keep the Empire out of the base long enough to evacuate it. The rebellion is still pretty small at this point, so running away is really the only answer. When the viewer sees how much of a ragtag group the rebels are and how hard they have to fight just to try to stay a step ahead of the Empire, it is easy to see that the rebellion is still just a pipe dream. At this point it seems like there is no way these people can win against such an overwhelming force.

After barely escaping, the main characters decide to split up. Luke goes to find Yoda, who is going to train him in the ways of the force. The training that takes place is some of the best examples of just how in over his head Luke was. He really had no idea what he was supposed to be doing.

At the same time, Han, Leia, Chewie and C-3PO are still on the run. They weren't able to completely lose their pursuers as they left Hoth. While people watch them on the run, they can get a real sense of what is going on with this rebellion. It isn't just some grand ideal, it is a handful of people that are being relentlessly pursued by an organization that has nearly unlimited resources.

The movie ends when all the characters make their way to Cloud City. There Luke learns that Darth Vader is actually his father. But even though they all fought and were captured for the sake of trying to further the rebellion, and even though Luke gets some of the worst news of his life, no one really ends up winning. They fight only so that they can live to fight another day.

The whole movie is about one small group that is so relentlessly pursued it is nearly ridiculous. The only way for them to win is to not die, or get captured. And not all of them win, as Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett.

There are some allegories to the real world in this story. So often small groups fighting for what they believe in are chased by an overwhelmingly large force. It doesn't always end up the way it ends up in Star Wars, and we see in the end of this movie that it might not end well for this group either.

Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back hits a very emotional note. And by the end, there is really nothing to tell us that everything is going to be okay. There is no way to know what will become of Han or the rebellion. But there is a glimpse, at the end of the movie, of the fleet of ships the rebels have collected. For the first time it seems that, perhaps, they might just have a chance of winning, if there truly are that many people that are fighting back against the Empire. But everyone seems to lose in this movie. The good guys have to stay in hiding, the bad guys don't capture the people they wanted. No one gets what they want. And sometimes isn't that just how life is?
