Avoiding Water Damage In Your Kitchen

By Scott Rodgers

Kitchen is a very important part of your house that needs proper care and attention just like other parts of your house. However, it is often neglected by many homeowners. You need to take care of its structural integrity as it is a place where your home members and guests often visit.

The only other room that competes with this frequency is the bathroom in most circumstances but that also suffers from about the same amount and kind of neglect. This neglect causes water damage in the bathroom.

Along with physical damage to your house, water damage also destroys a lot of valuables of your house and it also drops the value to your house. Therefore, you should get rid of this problem at the earliest.

The most important structure in the kitchen is not really the most obvious one: the floor. The floor of your kitchen really needs to be water tight, since not only water spills on the bathroom floor but also grease. For this reason, hardwood floors should not be put in the kitchen. Installing laminate floors that appear almost like natural wood is a great alternative since they will handle spills in a better manner.

One thing that is important to take care of is your dishwasher. In case your dishwasher does not work properly or it starts leaking then it will directly affect the floor of your kitchen. To get rid of this problem, you should either get your dishwasher repaired or purchase a new one.

Another thing to consider is the ceilings and upper walls. You might not realize this, but the ceiling of your kitchen takes just as much of a beating as the floor does over the years. Steam from cooking on the stove year after year is absorbed by it and will eventually cause it to discolor or even to sag.

An exhaust vent is very essential to have in your kitchen as it removes humidity from the kitchen. An exhaust also helps in preventing molds growth and reduces the damage to the ceiling. Therefore, if you don't have an exhaust installed in your kitchen then get one today only.

As much as possible, avoid spilling of water on the floor and keep the counters cleaned. Water and grease can do a lot of damage to the floor if they are allowed to stay on the surface for long time.
