A new swimming pool is without a doubt one of the more entertaining pieces of household equipment to look for, but making sure you choose the right pool for you and your family is vital if you don't want to waste money. If you have an in ground pool then it is very difficult to change it once the pool is there, so you really need to get it right the first time around to avoid an expensive mistake.

One of the most important decisions you'll have to make when buying a new swimming pool is the type. There are two broad categories - above ground and in ground. However there are many variation of these too, but they should be your first decision.

When most people think of a swimming pool in their back garden they imagine an in ground pool. As the name suggests these are built into the ground and are hence a permanent feature of the garden. For that reason you can pretty much get them in whatever size and shape you desire as they are custom built, but they can cost a lot. Most in ground pools will fun into the thousands of pounds and they can be a lot more.

The next thing you should take into account is how big the pool is. Of course you want your pool to be as big as possible, but there is no point getting one that means you have no garden left!

A big decider in the type of pool you get is your budget. In ground pools are usually much more expensive, but are definitely the better option if you have the money available as well as the knowledge that you will be in your house for many years to come.
